From bilateral cooperation to LMU
– China Academic Network
The LMU ‒ China Academic Network was established in 2015 and now includes 10 of China's most renowned universities, all of which are located in and around Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Since 2005, LMU Munich has established a wide range of contacts and collaborations with outstanding partners and leading research universities in China in the fields of Life Sciences and Health, Environmental and Geosciences, as well as the Humanities and Social Sciences. LMU began to develop the LMU ‒ China Academic Network project (LMU-ChAN) in 2015. Unlike strategic partnerships, each of which involves a single partnering university, the network model allows one to focus on different scientific areas and diverse collaboration models, and generates additional synergy effects. The network now includes the following leading universities in China:
Peking University
Tsinghua University
Renmin University
Fudan University
Shanghai Jiaotong University
Tongji University
Zhejiang University
Nanjing University
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Sun Yat-sen University
Scientific Forum
The annual Scientific Forum is an important element of the network's structure. The Forum not only serves to generate ideas for collaborative ventures in research and teaching, it also helps to nurture and extend existing contacts and interactions. The symposium comprises lectures, panel discussions and workshops with between 70 and 100 participants. It brings together both established and early-career researchers, as well as students from LMU and China. The Forum is hosted by LMU and one or other of the partnering universities in alternate years.
The venue of the Forum alternates between LMU Munich and one of the partnering universities in China:
1.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: LMU Munich from November 13-15, 2015.
2.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Zhejiang University in Hangzhou from November 20-22, 2016.
3.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: LMU Munich from October 27 to 29, 2017.
4.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Peking University from November 22 to 24, 2018.
5.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Online from November 27 to 28, 2021
6.LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Fudan University in Shanghai from November 16 to 18, 2023
Intensifying dialogue in the scientific community
Alongside the Scientific Forum, the ChAN network also supports research visits, mini-workshops and summer schools involving LMU and its partner universities.
